I thought I got teased before…

This weekend was somewhat of an auspicious weekend for me, as it marked the first time I used my new electric guitar.
To say the least, I was pretty excited. The band was locked in and aside from some early adjustments to the new “axe,” I was feeling pretty good. In fact, after the 9 am service on Sunday, Kimberly said that she thought this was the best she’s felt during a set ever! Just so you know, it’s a good thing when your boss is happy with your work.
By the third service, I was getting a little cocky and even remember looking out and seeing Dana and Allen in the crowd and thinking, “yeah, look who’s rockin’ with the big boys now!” Everything was going great; that is, until “Sing to the King.” I started it as usual and Kimberly did the first verse and then as we repeated the first verse, things started to get hairy. Something just wasn’t right. I’m the music director and so it’s my job to look around and figure it out. Frank’s doing fine, Robert’s locked in on drums, Alan’s not playing because he hears it to, Mesha’s plugging away and Paul…well, I had my capo on the wrong fret. I had started the song in the wrong key and now there was nothing I could do. This all seems a bit jumbled and you may not understand what I’m saying. Let me show you:
Of course, my major disaster has to happen on the one weekend when Kevin McGill is video taping the service!
The other guitar players in the band like to give me a hard time for using a capo, but generally, I get it right. I’ll never hear the end of this one!

Dude! You have video?? AWESOME!!!
Ah well, we’ve all caused a train wreck at one point or another. Welcome to the club. bro. I’ll teach you the secret handshake at rehearsal Thursday!

That was fantastic! I love that you guys actually stopped… my train wrecks usually involve ridiculously slooooooow tempos.

Thanks Paul! Now we don’t have to talk about Easter 2007 anymore when I started the New Day song with my transpose key on!!! I still remember Frank walking over to me non-chalantly and whispering in my ear “IS YOUR TRANSPOSE BUTTON ON” To my horror and New Day’s who were now singing a song 3 steps higher than they were suppose to reality set in! I’m sure they wish you would have stopped and started the song over, but no mercy for me, the train wreck continued through the whole song!!
I officially hand the crown over Dude!! Don’t worry I’m sure someone else will come along soon to take your crown!! (probably me again!)

Dude that is hilarious. Paul you would freak out over here. People worship with drums and harmoniums. And the harmoniums are ALWAYS out of tune!
So just know, there is always a place for a worship leader who plays with a capo on the wrong fret in South Asia.

I am so glad I got to experience this! I agree with Liz F. now we can move on from the Easter ‘07 fiasco. Great job!
I appriciate your honesty and leadership by taking the fall for this one, even when Kimberly gave you an out, you didn’t take it, no, you’re too humble for that. Good job.

Dude…you live for this stuff! It’s great material, and made your posting so much funnier
By the way…I didn’t make it into service on Sunday, but I had heard about this before leaving campus! You are what legends are made of my friend.
AWESOME!!!

Wow - my heart sank when Kimberly stopped singing because I already read the blog and knew what was coming. On a positive not - you have a new answer to the question “what is your most embarrassing moment?” We all have them so your in good company.

Been there done that, although it’s been a while…
We’ve had it happen several times at GracePoint in the last few months. The best one was when the acoustic guitar player forgot the capo and the electric guitar was way out of tune. It was ugly!
