Missions Weekend @ Clovis Hills

This weekend is missions weekend at Clovis Hills and I am excited!  We’re sending out a team headed to the Philippines or Pilippines for you non-english speakers (there’s no f sound in the Philippino language, did you know that?), and we’re going to do my song, “Come Home.”

It’s pretty cool that we’ll be doing the song here as this was always my hope for this song.  I wrote it in Africa and wanted to write a song that would help the folks at my church see a bit of what we saw; now, that can happen.

Hopefully I’ll have some clips next week, though we’re still without a video camera so I’ll have to borrow.

In the meantime (cuz I’m feeling nostalgic) here’s a reposting of our trip to the studio to record this song.

The best time to be a Christian in America? Now.

Yesterday I watched the inaguration and all of the festivities surrounding it and am hopeful that yesterday marked  a time of change in our country.

I am convinced that this is the best time to be a Christian in America, because it gives us a chance to separate our faith from an agenda and gives us the unique opportunity to be the voice for those without one; to raise the banner of the hurting and to reclaim a little bit of moral authority; that when we say something, we mean it and when we say we care for people, we actually do.

Watching the whole shindig I was floored by Rick Warren’s prayer.  He was criticized from every side for accepting this invitation and it would have been easy for him to stay home or say a simple, generic blessing.  Instead, he prayed with hope, and passion and sincerely as scripture tells us to.  Say what you will about Purpose Driven Rick, but God has given this guy an amazing platform and he continues to rise to the occasion.

Here’s a transcript of his prayer:

Rick Warren’s Prayer

Almighty God, our Father:Everything we see, and everything we can’t see, exists because of you alone.

It all comes from you, it all belongs to you, it all exists for your glory.

History is your story.

The Scripture tells us, “Hear, O Israel, the LORD is our God, the LORD is one.” And you are the compassionate and merciful one. And you are loving to everyone you have made.

Now today, we rejoice not only in America’s peaceful transfer of power for the 44th time, we celebrate a hinge point of history with the inauguration of our first African-American president of the United States.

We are so grateful to live in this land, a land of unequaled possibility, where a son of an African immigrant can rise to the highest level of our leadership. And we know today that Dr. King and a great cloud of witnesses are shouting in heaven.

Give to our new president, Barack Obama, the wisdom to lead us with humility, the courage to lead us with integrity, the compassion to lead us with generosity.

Bless and protect him, his family, Vice President Biden, the Cabinet, and every one of our freely elected leaders.

Help us, O God, to remember that we are Americans—united not by race or religion or blood, but to our commitment to freedom and justice for all.

When we focus on ourselves, when we fight each other, when we forget you—forgive us.

When we presume that our greatness and our prosperity is ours alone—forgive us.

When we fail to treat our fellow human beings and all the earth with the respect that they deserve—forgive us.

And as we face these difficult days ahead, may we have a new birth of clarity in our aims, responsibility in our actions, humility in our approaches, and civility in our attitudes—even when we differ.

Help us to share, to serve, and to seek the common good of all.

May all people of good will today join together to work for a more just, a more healthy, and a more prosperous nation and a peaceful planet.

And may we never forget that one day, all nations–and all people–will stand accountable before you.

We now commit our new president and his wife, Michelle, and his daughters, Malia and Sasha, into your loving care.

I humbly ask this in the name of the one who changed my life—Yeshua, ‘Isa, Jesus [Spanish pronunciation], Jesus—who taught us to pray:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name.

Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever.

Amen.

A couple of guys from student ministries here wrote a song for me for my birthday last week.  What I did to deserve a birthday song from a couple of 16 year olds I’ll never know, let alone these two 16 year olds, but it’s pretty awesome none the less.

Check it out!

Twitter Hills?

okay, that was a stupid title, but I have to talk about how twitter is revolutionizing Clovis Hills.  We have a bunch of staff members and attenders rocking and it’s tweet-tastic (over the top?)!

Most recently, one of our elders joined the twitter extravaganza, and aside from having to watch my mouth a little more (just kidding) I think that brings us one step closer to having some of our executive staff on this wonderful bit of social networking.

Today, I had an entire meeting over twitter with our missions director, Terry, who was unavailable to talk in any other medium and twitter saved the day!

If you’re on the fence about signing up, it’s free and you don’t have to worry about not knowing anybody.  Here is a list of all of the Clovis Hills tweets (using their twitter names).

  1. aronstrong
  2. danapellerin
  3. jonigibson

I know what you’re thinking, “but Paul, Twitter is stupid!”  Well, my friends, everyone on this list said the same thing and now they’re on and hooked!

Come, be a part of the revolution (again, maybe a little over the top)!

A year ago I was in Africa.  I was taking in the whole crazy thing at this point as our team was getting situated.

We had traveled 17 hours and were exhausted, and I remember trying really hard to watch everyone on the team take it all in for the first time, while trying to do the same for myself.

A year ago I wrote a song that tried to capture what I saw and the hope I have for those people.  We’re doing the song here in a couple of weeks and as I prepare for that I’m struck by the reality that I have forgotten too quickly that God changed me.

It’s hard to believe that it has been a year.  So much has changed since that trip and the reality is that I haven’t changed enough.  This week in Bible study we were reading Philippians and a verse stood out that never has before; “Live your lives in a manner worthy of the gospel of Jesus Christ.”

A year ago my life was changed and I have too quickly forgotten about it.  I have too quickly stopped waving the banner for the hurting people in Africa.

A year ago my eyes were opened and I will never be the same. Again.
